New Years Resolutions, Panama City, FL-Arrow Pest Service

As we enter the new year, it is common to make resolutions and plans for how you are going to live. People will often look ahead and schedule out major events and perform annual errands during this time.

With our decades of experience in the pest industry, we have seen pest seasons come and go many times, and thus we have a good idea of what steps homeowners should be taking during this time to make sure they are prepared. With the spring swarming season just around the corner, homeowners should make pest protection for their home one of their new years resolutions!

So without further ado, here are our tips to keeping your home secure in the new year!

  1. Schedule Regular Inspections for your Property:

The fact is, the best time to deal with ANY pest infestation is before it occurs. The damage done by destructive pests such as termites, carpenter ants, and bed bugs often increases exponentially with the growth of the infestation, and many of these infestations are much harder to remove once they are allowed to sufficiently spread. Therefore, early detection and prevention will often save homeowners time, frustration, and expense in the long run.

Since many pests infest secluded parts of the home not frequented by humans, a thorough inspection may be the only way to identify signs of pest activity. Due to this, it is best for homeowners to at least have one annual inspection per year. This can allow you to rest easy knowing that your home is pest free, and inspections will often reveal conducive environmental conditions in your home that could cause future infestations if not dealt with.

   2. Resolve Conducive Conditions Where Possible:

“Spring Cleaning” is a common beginning of the year activity for many. During this time, homeowners should also be on the lookout for anything in and around their home that might be making their home an easier or more attractive location for pests

As there are millions of different pest species, and each has different environmental preferences, it is impossible to list them all. However, there are a few standard practices that cover major pest groups:

  • Clean up any trash or debris around the exterior of the home or in garages, sheds, or basements
  • Reduce abnormal moisture levels/Repair water damage
  • Seal any exterior access points such as vents, windows, or doors
  • Repair any external structural damage
  • Seal and store any potential food sources to avoid attracting pests

While this is not an exhaustive list, performing these steps will substantially reduce the chances of you dealing with a destructive infestation.

3. Schedule Preventative Treatment Early:

As part of your new years resolutions, we hope that you will place priority on scheduling preventative treatments for your home. As we approach termite and mosquito season, pest control companies across the board will start to become busy and overburdened with customer calls.  The fact is, the value of prevention is much greater than that of a cure. Many pests are significantly more difficult to remove if they are allowed to establish themselves in your home, and thus it is best to take steps to prevent initial infestation rather than calling a pest control company after you have spotted the problem.

Starting the year by scheduling an comprehensive inspection and preventative treatments will make sure that your home is protected throughout the year!

Small gray moths flying around my home, Panama City, FL- Arrow Pest Service

There are a variety of different pests that are known for contaminating food in your home.

While each of these can cause problems in their own way, one stands above the rest and is widely considered to be the most common stored food pest of all. This pest is the Indianmeal moth.

Homeowners will sometimes notice small, grayish moths flying around their homes. Because they are so rarely found near to food sources, they are often misidentified as another moth species. The truth is, the gray moths that you are seeing are not the problem you should worry about.

The true threat is posed by the Indianmeal moth larvae.

So how can Indianmeal moth larvae cause problems in your home?

Indianmeal moth larvae have a diverse diet that includes most types of stored foods. This can include pet food, cereal, rice, flour, bread, and other grains. The larvae are often brought into the home originally in infested stored food. Once inside, they will grow into adults that lay more eggs inside the stored food. These eggs will hatch and the new larvae will spread to feed on and contaminate other foods in pantries and cabinet.

Homeowners will often spot the adult moths as well as a silky residue on certain dried foods, but oftentimes they will not realize that these two problems are in fact one and the same. Problems also arise because the larvae tend to target food sources that may not be frequently accessed, so it is possible to have contaminated foods without your knowledge.

It can be difficult to deal with an Indianmeal moth infestation because eliminating the adult moths will do very little to deal with the ongoing infestation.

The only way to completely deal with this problem is to identify and remove the source of the infestation.

Any dry foods that might house larvae should be checked, and if signs of infestation was found they should be thrown out. If you are unable to identify the primary source of the infestation, you should consider calling in a professional pest service to inspect your home.

If you are concerned about potential Indianmeal moth activity, Arrow Pest Service is your one call solution to any pest problem!
