Don’t let ants ruin your summer activities, Panama City, FL-Arrow Pest Service

Ants in your home or outdoor eating areas can be a major nuisance.

With spring bringing warmth once again, many families here in Florida will be enjoying a variety of outdoor activities. These activities, however, can be ruined by the presence of scavenging ant pests.

Worse still, if these pests get into your home, they can establish a tenacious infestation. Oftentimes, when you find small ants moving throughout your home, the guilty party is the sugar ant.

Sugar ants are a species of small scavenger ants. Growing to around 15mm, sugar ant workers can be identified by their distinct orange body coloration and dark band on the rear of their bodies.

Unlike destructive ant species such as carpenter ants, sugar ants cannot directly harm your home. Instead, they often enter the home as accidental invaders, seeking a food or moisture source. Your home can provide a variety of food resources, from stored dried foods to small spills and crumbs.

Sugar ants will make a nuisance of themselves by spreading throughout your kitchens, dining rooms, and outdoor eating areas. Once they have found a food resource, it can be difficult to deter them from coming back over and over.

Protect your lawn from turf destroying insects, Panama City, FL – Arrow Pest Service

Pest control is not just about protecting your home.

There are a number of pests that have a different target: your lawn. These lawn destroying pests can be a major threat to your property, especially during the spring and early summer.

One of the most destructive examples of these types of pests is the sod web worm. These invaders can cause significant damage to your lawn if left unchecked.

But what are sod web worms, and how do they attack your lawn?

Sod web worms are not a species in and of themselves. In fact, they are actually the larvae of the lawn moth. Adult lawn moths are not destructive, but the young larvae cause significant damage to the grass by feeding on the steams and leaves of the plant.

Sod web worms begin life as eggs inside silk-lined tunnels located just below the soil surface. They emerge when the warm weather returns, typically around April or May. For the the rest of the summer, these pests will grow and consume the grass from below. This will leave behind unsightly, brown patches of dead grass throughout the lawn.

Sod web worm prefer to live in lawns with a large amount of thatch, as this provides them with cover and a steady source of food. They often infest areas that get less water than usual such as slopes, banks, or secluded corners of the lawn.

How do you protect your lawn from sod web worms?

Sod web worms are much more likely to invade lawns that are already unhealthy. As with many pests, the best way to protect your lawn from sod web worms is by keeping it healthy, well watered, and regularly mown. This will prevent the establishment of conducive conditions that might attract the web worms.

As the month of July begins, friends and families across the country gather together to celebrate our independence and to enjoy a variety of fun summer activities. While homeowners are enjoying these events, they most likely want to do so without dealing with any nuisance pests. We have been dealing with pests in the United States since before 1776, and they show no signs of going anywhere!

While summer brings sunny days and outdoor events, it also brings an increase in pest activity. Here in Florida, our warm and humid climate is a perfect breeding ground for a variety of pests. From destructive pests such as termites to nuisance pests such as mosquitoes and flies, homeowners find themselves assaulted during this time of year with new pest problems. For this reason, it is all the more important during this time of the year to ensure that your home is protected from any potential pest infestations.

The best way to make sure that your home is protected from pests is to have an inspection of your home completed by a licensed pest control company. An inspection can discover pest activity early, preventing an infestation from becoming too severe. It also serves to identify any conditions that could be conducive to future pest infestation such as exterior structure damage, water damage, or unsealed access points such as windows or vents. Since pests are significantly more difficult to remove once they have established themselves in your home, having an inspection can save you a lot of frustration down the road.

If you are currently dealing with active pest problems, our team can provide you with a variety of treatment options to remove any infestations. Unlike some companies that use the same basic treatments for every job, our technicians use information gathered in the inspection of the home to decide on the safest, most effective approach for dealing with any pests in your home. This helps to make treatment faster, and saves you money due to the use of more efficient treatment options.

So if you are dealing with pests that are threatening to ruin your summer activities, call Arrow Pest Service today! How do you keep your home bed bug free? Panama City, FL-Arrow Pest Service

In our previous articles, we have discussed how a homeowner might be able to identify bed bugs, as well as the ways bed bugs tend to access your home. However, one big question remains: how do you keep your home bed bug free?

The fact is, once bed bugs have established themselves in your home, it is significantly more difficult to keep them out as opposed to taking measures to keep your home bed bug free to begin with. In our previous article, (Check that article out here: http://arrowps.com/uncategorized/1091/) we discussed how bed bugs often enter homes traveling inside luggage or furniture. Due to this, one of the best steps homeowners can take to keep their homes free of bedbugs is to carefully inspect and clean any luggage or furniture before it is brought into the home. This can help to significantly reduce the chances of bed bugs being brought into the home in the first place.

Like many other pests, bed bugs prefer to hide in secluded, cluttered areas.

Cleaning up areas with clutter can help to expose any active infestations and reduce possible habitation areas. Another important step is to regularly wash an linens and sheets with the hottest possible temperature, as these are common hiding areas for bed bugs. The heat from this washing will kill any bed bugs inside and destroy any eggs.

If you are already dealing with an active infestation, your best option is to call Arrow Pest Service.

While there are a variety of products marketed for bed bug treatment, many of these products are Kill-On-Contact, which means that they are only effective against pests that are directly exposed to them. Since the majority of the typical bed bug population remains in hiding, these products will do nothing to deal with the larger problem. Due to this, the best option for treatment is a professional technician inspecting the property and applying treatment capable of completely eradicating the infestation.

At Arrow Pest Service, we have years of experience dealing with bed bugs. Our technicians are highly trained, and begin any service with a thorough inspection of your property. Once we have identified any signs of pest activity or conditions conducive to infestation, we will formulate a safe, targeted treatment plan to completely deal with your pest problems!

Bed bug problem, Panama City, FL-Arrow Pest Service

The bed bug is a pest that is viewed with fear and repugnance.

A bed bug infestation is a nightmare that owners of homes and hotels fear, and for good reason. Bed bugs are very difficult to deal with, and it can take months to fully eliminate an infestation from a home. For this reason, it is very important to be informed about bed bugs and the ways to mitigate the risk they pose to your home.

Bed bugs are small, round insects with a red and brown body coloration. While they are easy to identify when spotted, their reclusive nature can make them difficult to identify until they have built up a significant population inside your home.

Due to their secluded nature, bed bugs will often hide in areas around the home that are both well hidden and offer access to a host for blood meals, be that a person or a pet. They are commonly found in areas such as mattress seams, sheets, furniture, near baseboards, or in closets.

Bed bugs are nocturnal insects, and therefore they will remain hidden until they emerge to feed after dark. Often, the first evidence of bed bug activity are the bites found on people and pets in the home. Another common sign of bed bug activity are the skins left behind by young, developing bed bugs as they grow. Bed bugs also leave behind black or brown stains from defecation, which will often be found around their hiding areas.

Bed bugs are a problematic and tenacious pest.

Homeowners who see any possible signs of bed bug activity should have call in a professional pest service to inspect and treat their property.

Mosquitoes around my home, Panama City, FL-Arrow Pest Service

Mosquitoes are a very common pest during this time of the year.

Homeowners often report spotting large numbers of mosquitoes around their homes and yards, especially after storms. Mosquitoes thrive in warm, humid climates, which makes them a major problem here in Florida.

Mosquitoes are taxonomically sorted into order Diptera, along with all true flies. They have one pair of wings, and are characterized by their long, thin bodies and large sucking mouthpart known as proboscis.

There are over 3500 identified species of mosquitoes.

They can be found on every continent other than Antarctica, and they are extremely numerous here in the Southeast. Mosquitoes are infamous vectors of disease, and are responsible for millions of deaths every year as they spread illnesses such as malaria, West Nile virus, Zika, and yellow fever. Billions of dollars are spent around the world each year trying to combat the threat caused by mosquitoes, and this makes them one of the most loathed creatures in the animal kingdom. In the United States, we have largely eliminated the more dangerous diseases that can be spread by mosquitoes. Despite this, mosquitoes can still be a frustrating and problematic pest.

Contrary to popular belief, not all species of mosquitoes feed on blood. In fact, only the females of most mosquito species feed on blood, and certain species feed instead on sugary substances such as nectar from plants. When mosquitoes feed on blood, they often pick up diseases and bacteria from the blood of animals or people, this is what makes them such effective vectors of disease.

Mosquitoes reproduce extremely quickly.

After a female mosquito mates, it will immediately seek out a blood meal to provide nutrients for future eggs. Mosquitoes typically lay their eggs in standing water. Any pool of water, from as large as lakes and wetlands to as small as a bucket of water or bird bath can be sufficient for mosquitoes to reproduce. This is why mosquitoes can become problematic during the spring and summer due to increased rainfall and rising temperatures. Each female mosquito can lay as many as one hundred eggs in one cycle, and this allows mosquito populations to grow rapidly. The eggs hatch quickly, and the new larvae, sometimes known as tumblers, feed until they enter a pupal stage. This stage is complete when the new adult mosquitoes emerge and restart the life cycle.

Mosquitoes can quickly become a problem around your home.

Their rapid reproduction allows them to build up a large population in and around your home, this can quickly become a nuisance and ruin any outdoor activities that you might have planned.

Keeping your home mosquito free can be difficult, and treatment varies greatly depending on the scale of the problem. The best way to keep your home mosquito free is to remove any conditions that are conducive to mosquito reproduction. Removing any standing water around your property prevents mosquitoes from reproducing as quickly, and any larger bodies of water such as a pond or lake can be treated with products that can keep mosquitoes away. If you are already dealing with a large mosquito population on your property, it is often best to call Arrow Pest Service to inspect and treat your home.

At Arrow Pest Service, our team has decades of experience treating for pests. Rather than simply providing a basic treatment service, our technicians will thoroughly inspect your property, identifying any signs of pest activity or conditions that are conducive to infestation, and formulate a safe and targeted treatment plan to deal with your specific pest problems. Small ants inside my home, Panama City,FL-Arrow Pest Service

If you are a homeowner living in Florida, it is likely that you have encountered the swarms of small ants that frequently plague homes in the state. In many cases, the culprits are white footed ants.

White footed ants are a species native to the United States. They are especially active in Florida due to the warm climate, but can be found in other Southeastern states. White footed ants are relatively small in size, growing to less than 1/10 of an inch in length. They are black or brown in coloration, and can be most easily identified by their yellowish-white feet for which they get their name.

Like most species of ants, white footed ants have a diverse diet. They will consume sweets, proteins, dead insects, and plant nectar. In some cases, they will also farm honeydew from aphids or mealybugs.

White footed ants are often spread to homes via plants and landscaping materials such as mulch. They will be carried to a new location, and then enter homes in search of food. Due to their small size, they are able to enter into areas that would be inaccessible to other pests. Most commonly, ants around your home will be spotted in bathrooms, kitchens, or crawling along the exterior of the structure.

White footed ants do not sting or bite, and they cause no structural damage to homes that they infest. However, they can be a problem for homeowners due to the sheer size of their nest populations. The average nest can contain several million ants, and they can quickly swarm and infest your home when searching for food.

Dealing with white footed ants can be difficult due to their large population and small size. The best step for keeping the ants out of your home is to ensure that any plants or other materials that are brought to your home are not carrying white footed ants. This especially applies for any indoor plants, as they can give white footed ants easy access to an otherwise well protected home. If white footed ants have already infested your home, the best option is usually to call in a professional pest service to treat the home.

Here at Arrow Pest Service, we have years of experience treating for pests of all kinds. Our skilled technicians will thoroughly inspect your home and formulate a targeted treatment plant to deal with your specific pest problems. All at a price that fits your budget!

Carpet beetles, Panama City, FL-Arrow Pest Service

A common concern amongst homeowners is the threat of carpet beetle infestation.

Carpet beetles can be a major threat to any animal based textiles if they establish a presence in your home.

Carpet beetles are generally found in areas of the home such as laundry rooms, bathrooms, and bedrooms. Often they are carried into the home clinging to linens and textiles, and from there they disperse and infest your home. The adult carpet beetles themselves are generally not a threat, however their larvae are attracted to and will cause damage to animal based products. Product such as leather, silk, and wool are common targets for consumption.

While carpet beetle larvae generally only chew small holes through garments, even a small hole on costly and delicate clothing such as a wool coat or a silk scarf can ruin the item, and this can be an expensive loss. Carpet beetle larvae will not consume most carpets as they do not eat synthetic fibers. They will, however, consume expensive animal fiber rugs such as Persian rugs.

Due to the potential damage they can cause, it is important to act quickly if you notice any signs of carpet beetle activity in your home. The most commonly reported sign of carpet beetle activity is spotting the larvae around areas near textiles, and they can be spotted on light colored tiles, baseboards, and washing machines. Carpet beetles are also commonly found clinging to fibers such as towels and blankets, and areas such as storage closets can be excellent hiding places for the beetles.

If you are dealing with a carpet beetle infestation, it is often best to call for a professional pest company to treat your home to avoid the potential expense that carpet beetles can cause with their feeding.

Here at Arrow Pest Service, we have years of experience treating for pests of all kinds. Rather than simply applying a general treatment, or technicians will thoroughly inspect your property, identifying any signs of pest activity or conditions conducive to infestation. After inspecting the home, we will provide you with the best pest solutions for your specific situation, all at a price that fits your budget!

Bumblebees swarming around my home, Panama City, FL -Arrow Pest Service

During the spring and early summer months, it is common for homeowners to spot a variety of insects active around their home. One common insect seen around this time is the bumblebee.

Bumblebees are large insects, growing up to 1 inch in length. They have a black and yellow body coloration and a “fuzzy” appearance due to tiny hairs on their abdomen. This fuzzy appearance is a distinguishing feature from other bees such as honeybees or carpenter bees. Female bumblebees are equipped with stingers, while males do not sting.

Bumblebees are social insects. They typically create nests in dry, secluded areas either on or beneath the ground. In some cases, bumblebees will nest in or near homes. Common areas include behind structural siding, underneath piles of debris, or inside of birdhouses. Bumblebee nest populations are fairly small compared to other bees, and will typically include between 100-300 bees.

Life Cycle

Bumblebees undergo complete metamorphosis, which means they experience four distinct development stages, moving for egg to larvae, entering a pupal stage, and finally emerging as adults. The lifecycle of bumblebees begins with a new queen. Queens overwinter after mating and emerge during the spring to form new nests. They will raise and care for the first generation of the nest, before ceding most of the responsibility to new generations of workers. Workers will gather pollen and nectar to feed the nest, and the queen will continue to produce new generations of bees to expand the nest. In the late summer months, the queen will lay eggs that will produce new reproductive male and female offspring. These reproductive members of the nest will mate shortly after. After mating, the reproductive females will leave the nest to find somewhere to overwinter, emerging the following spring as new queens. Each nest lasts for only a year, and the average lifespan of each worker bumblebee is around one month.

Bumblebees are not aggressive insects, and rarely sting unless threatened.

It is also important to note that, unlike carpenter bees, bumblebees feed only on plant nectar and pollen, and are not a threat to the structure of your home. Many homeowners and gardeners also value the beneficial role that bumblebees play as pollinators. For these reasons, bumblebee nests that are not in close proximity to your home are best left alone.

However, in cases where a bumblebee nest is close to your home or is attached to the structure of your home, it can be necessary to eliminate the bees as they can sting people and pets if they feel that their nest is threatened.

The best way to deal with potential bumblebee problems is to eliminate any conditions that are conducive to their nest building. You can greatly reduce the chances of bumblebees building nests in or around your home by repairing or sealing any gaps or damage around the exterior of your home. It can also help to minimize any buildup of debris or firewood, as these areas are also common nesting areas for bumblebees.

If you are dealing with an active infestation around your home, there are a variety of pesticide products that can help to eliminate nest populations. These products must be used with care, and proper precaution should always be taken when approaching a nest of bees, especially for those who are allergic to bee stings. Because of these difficulties, it is often better to call in a professional pest service to deal with any nests that are active near to your home.

Here at Arrow Pest Service, we have years of experience treating pests of all kinds. Our technicians can thoroughly inspect your property, identify any signs of pests or conditions conducive to future infestation, and provide you with the best solutions to solve your specific pest problems.

Don’t let weeds ruin your lawn, Arrow Pest Service-Panama City, FL

Weeds are one of the biggest obstacles faced by homeowners who are trying to maintain a healthy and beautiful lawn.

There are a large variety of plants that can be classified as weeds, with some species being more common in certain climates and less common in others. Here in Florida, our warm climate and frequent rain are ideal for some of the most notorious types of weeds such as crabgrass, dandelions, clover, and bull thistle.

It is important to note that weeds in a lawn are almost always a symptom of a greater issue.

While small numbers of weeds can sometimes encroach on healthy lawns, it often requires some issue with the health of the lawn to give weeds the foothold they need to establish themselves. For this reason, one of the most effective ways to deal with weeds is to ensure that you keep your lawn in excellent health. Listed below are several tips to maintaining a healthy lawn and keeping weeds away.

Fertilization:

When fertilizing your lawn, it is important to apply only as much as is directed by the packaging. If too much fertilizer is applied to a lawn, the excess can act as a nutrient source for weeds. It is also important to only apply fertilizer during growth seasons for your lawn. If the grasses in the lawn are unable to take advantage of the fertilizer, certain annual weeds can easily use the nutrients to take over your lawn.

Watering:

It is always better to water your lawn less frequently with more water at each application. If a lawn is only lightly watered, the root systems of the grasses will often be shallow. The lack of deep root systems will make the grasses weaker and provide an opportunity for weeds to sprout and where grass might otherwise choke them out.

Mowing:

When mowing your lawn, make sure to avoid mowing too close to the soil. This can weaken turf and expose surface soil to the light, which can allow weeds to sprout more easily. Typically the best setting for mowing is between 2 and 4 inches, depending on the type of mower and type of grass in your lawn.

If weeds are already established in your lawn, it can sometimes be necessary to use herbicide or weed and feed to deal with the problem.

While these types of treatments are very effective, it is extremely important to follow the instructions for the use of these products. Improper application or the use of the wrong type of product can cause major damage to your lawn.

However, just as it is with many species of invasive pests, the best way to deal with weeds is to prevent them from spreading on your lawn in the first place. Following proper lawn care procedures and dealing with any problems early will help to prevent any major problems. If you are already dealing with significant growth of weeds in your lawn, it is often best to refer to a professional service.

Here at Arrow Pest Service, we have years of experience working as both a full service pest control company and lawn care service. Our team can assess the condition of your lawn, resolve any problems with weeds or other issues, and keep your lawn in the best possible health, all at a price that fits your budget!

So if you are dealing with weeds in your lawn, or have a question about pests or lawn care, call us today at 850-874-1900!
