Bed Bugs
Bed bugs have been around for centuries. In the United States, bed bugs were very common until about World War II. It was not until the last decade that reported cases indicated a rise in bed bug infestations. Possible factors fueling the return of the bed bug include an increase in international travel and increased resistance to certain insecticides. The introduction of new pest control methods that leave bed bugs unharmed (treatments and treatment sites are more pest-specific, i.e. bait treatment for roaches).

Bed Bug TreatmentsBed Bug heat Treatment
Bed bug heat treatment is a highly effective method for eliminating these pests and their eggs. The process involves heating the infested area to a temperature between 120°F and 140°F, which kills bed bugs at all life stages. This method penetrates cracks and crevices, reaching areas where bed bugs hide, and is chemical-free, making it safe for most belongings. Professional pest control companies with experience in heat treatments should be hired to ensure the process is conducted safely and effectively.
The behaviour and biology of Bed Bugs
Identifying Bed BugsBehavior
Bed bugs are nocturnal insects that hide in cracks and crevices during the day, emerging at night to feed on their unsuspecting hosts. They are attracted to the carbon dioxide and heat produced by humans. Their activity typically begins around 7:00 p.m. and continues until midnight or later, with a notable decline after 7:00 a.m. However, they can adjust to feeding during the day if hungry. Bed bugs prefer dark, dry environments with rough surfaces, wood, and fabrics. Common ways that bed bug infestations can occur include staying in infested environments, having guests visit infested areas, and bringing in used furniture or bedding.
Biology
Adult bed bugs are small, measuring less than 1/4 inch in length, similar in size to an apple seed. They are flat, oval-shaped, and brownish-red in color, feeding exclusively on blood from mammals and birds. While they do not transmit diseases, their bites can cause itching, swelling, and sores from scratching. Bed bugs have claws for gripping rough surfaces but cannot climb smooth surfaces like glass. Their life cycle takes about four to five weeks, and they can survive for 6-7 months without feeding, sometimes on birds or rodents. Females can lay 200 to 500 eggs in their lifetime.
